The xx’s debut album, XX, was released via Rough Trade Records. The youthful London based quartet mixes soft, conversational like vocals, with down-tempo melodies, and the result is completely mood altering. The xx works mainly with a traditional set-up (drums, bass, guitar, keys, sampler), yet their music is rather refreshing and creative…they must have found an indie-pop loophole.

When I first discovered The xx, I had no idea who they were or if anyone else had heard of them- just knew I was Into Them. Over the past few weeks I have transitioned from like, into full blown love. Turns out I'm not the only one. The blogs are buzzing about them - making them the critic's darling 'it' band of the moment. This would typically make them fresh meat to the music vultures who love to prey on anything 'hyped'- however even they can't deny that their record lives up to the critical acclaim.

An interesting electronic/R&B mix that brings to mind elements of both Passion Pit and The Postal Service. My friend Ryan told me to check out Discovery and I'm glad I did.

History of the band:
"Before they rose to indie rock acclaim with their respective bands, Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot frontman Wes Miles recorded together as a duo, embracing everything from Auto-Tuned R&B to synth pop in the process. The musicians launched the project in 2005 and began piecing an album together in 2006, although the project was shelved when Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot began to gather steam. One year after both bands released debut albums, the two reconvened to finish the recordings, which were released in 2009 under the title LP." - from AllMusic.com

The compilation's 21-track lineup is impressive, the reason behind it -- the sudden death of Mulcahy's wife Melissa, leaving him to raise his three-year old twins alone -- heartbreaking.

The opening track, Thom Yorke's percussive, electro-tinged cover of Miracle Legion's "All For The Best," is also impressive, making it his own, while retaining the spirit of the original. As a result, fans of Radiohead, Miracle Legion, and Mulcahy should equally enjoy.

The full album is out 9/29 via Shout! Factory. An additional 20 tracks from folks like A.C. Newman, Buffalo Tom and Laura Veirs will be released digitally. Also expect concerts to coincide with the release. One will take place in London, one in New York

Sibling band Kitty, Daisy & Lewis play 40's/50's rockabilly and swing, country and western, Hawaiian and rock 'n' roll with a skill and energy that connects them to the past and ensures they'll be around in the future. Between them, the trio play guitar, piano, banjo, lapsteel guitar, harmonica, double bass, ukulele, trombone and accordion, swapping instruments between songs at their super-energetic live shows. The live shows started out as just Kitty, Daisy and Lewis performing with various guitar players providing a rhythm. After a while, they felt it worked best playing with their dad (Graeme) on acoustic guitar and their mum (Ingrid) on double bass.

'We play old music but we're playing it now,' says Lewis. For them, it's heroes like Louis Jordan, Louis Prima, Johnny Cash, Wynonie 'Mr Blues' Harris and Roy Brown who are on iPod rotation.

VINYL SECTION AT BIG BOX RETAILER?! Best Buy is considering devoting eight square feet of merchandising space to vinyl after testing the idea in 100 of its stores around the country, the N.Y. Post’s Peter Lauria reports. That’s enough space to accommodate just under 200 albums, which doesn’t seem like much until you consider that a typical Best Buy store devotes just 16 to 20 square feet to music. After increasing 15% in 2007, vinyl sales jumped 89% last year to 1.9 million albums, and this year is shaping up even better, with 670k albums sold by mid-April. While vinyl's growth obviously can't make up for the CD’s decline, it does show consumers haven't abandoned the physical format. And the fact that a retailer of Best Buy's size is willing to expand vinyl offerings is an incremental positive for a beleaguered industry.

I don't even know where to begin. There is so much shit to download. Most of it is coming from rapidshare which means that for every megabyte you download you have to wait approx 2 minutes to download again - so if you download 60m you have to wait 2 hours to download again (though there are pay options which eliminate the waiting).

A lot of this is in 128k, but it's stuff I can't find anywhere else so I don't care.

Several of these sites have links to other blogs as well, in particular the "deaconblues" guy.

Do not even get started if you are worried about your time.

Drawing vocal and stylistic influence from Otis Redding and Brian McKnight while bearing the gruff voice of a John Hiatt or a Dr. John, Broussard was barely 20 at the time of his first album's release. Though always a treat to hear him sing, nothing I have heard him record can compare to the energy and excitement of this track from his second album Carencro (named after Broussard's hometown of Carencro, Louisiana).

80's Hits Stripped is an ALL ACOUSTIC compilation of 80’s hit songs performed by the original artisits.

The majority of these acoustic interpretations are a bit slower or quieter than before and "No One Is to Blame," "Rebel Yell," "These Dreams," and “Heat Of The Moment” were all recorded live. The versions that deviate most include Berlin's "Metro," which speeds things up and Tommy Tutone's "867-5309/Jenny," which sounds rougher and more rugged than the original single, and Billy Squier's "Stroke," which makes a surprisingly successful segue from pop-metal to Delta blues. Then there are the voices, most of which (Colin Hay and Tommy Heath aside) sound as youthful as ever. On "Missing You," for instance, John Waite channels his twentysomething self with ease, while on "Our Lips Are Sealed," the Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin sounds downright girlish. Bottom line: If you liked these songs in the first place, you'll like 'em in the second.

Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal is a compilation of mostly obscure gospel acts from the late 1960s and early 1970s. This is that era of gospel that gave us Andrea Crouch and the Disciples and crossover hits from the Staple Singers. Decidedly well after gospel's "Golden Age," this was a time when black gospel--which of course was the primary influence on soul music--was in turn itself influenced by soul and funk. For far too long mega talent soul singer Candi Staton has been lacking a comprehensive collection of her prime Southern R&B material from her glory years, 1969-1973. While it's true that Staton's chart success continued in the disco era with "Young Hearts Run Free," from 1975, that music is in a different universe from her Muscle Shoals-period recording for Fame and other labels. This Astralwerks compilation contains 26 tracks from those hallowed years, when Staton's deep soul tomes rang up no less than 12 consecutive Billboard R&B hits, a pair of Grammy nominations, and a gold album. Like Aretha Franklin, Linda Jones, and Otis Redding, Staton's voice is the sound of emotion being ripped from the human heart and offered, bleeding and broken, pleading and yearning, to the listener. Collected here are her stunning "I'm Just a Prisoner (Of Good Loving), her amazing read of Redding's "That's How Strong My Love Is," the killer "I'm Another Man's Woman, Another Woman's Man," the definitive version of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man," "He Called Me Baby," "Sure As Sin," the stellar "Get It When I Want It," and the only version of "In the Ghetto" that matters. In all, while this could have easily been a double CD, all of the tracks here warrant their appearance: there isn't a mediocre one in the bunch, as evidenced further by the inclusion of "Heart on a String" "The Thanks I Get for Loving You," "Sweet Feeling," "Someone You Use," and "Love Chain," as well. Highly recommended.

Performing live shows up to five days a week in both upscale hotels and in the authentic Blues haunts of South Central, Mickey continues to develop as an artist and performer.

The late Charles Brown considered Mickey Champion one of the greatest powerhouse blues singers of all time. Not long before his death he said, "Ain't no one left who can sing like that when Mickey's gone".

Over the years she has performed with greats such as Billie Holiday, T. Bone Walker, and Dinah Washington…doubled for Esther Phillips and shared the friendships of singers Barbara Morrison, Linda Hopkins and Ray Brewster; and trumpet player Clora Bryant.

In an era where sometimes the heart and soul of good music seems to exist only in the past, Mickey Champion reminds us that inspiration never dies and that much of the beauty and tradition of yesterday is still here for us to enjoy.
